10 All Time Greatest Boss Battles From Metal Gear Franchise

9. Metal Gear Ray Vs Metal Gear Rex (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots)

When you play a Metal Gear Solid game, you generally expect to come up against some form of giant bipedal tank at some point.

As in most of the series, this is still true in Metal Gear Solid 4. Only difference is....you get to pilot one of the things yourself!

In a moment of ultimate fanservice, at the climax of Snake's return to Shadow Moses, Snake clambers into the cockpit of Metal Gear Rex. For many players, this will have been the first Metal Gear unit they ever put down, and, honestly, Solid Snake piloting a Metal Gear unit is just the most badass thing ever really, isn't it?

Then it gets even better. After a brief section escaping through the tunnels of Shadow Moses, you must fight against Liquid Ocelot, who is piloting a technically superior Metal Gear Ray unit.

What follows is a boss battle unlike any in the series, with its own unique gameplay mechanics suited to mech-on-mech combat. Thematically it packs a massive punch too; Shadow Moses is such a special place in MGS lore and the two brothers going head-to-head with the machines, right there in that location where it all began, remains one of the series' highlights.
