10 All Time Greatest Boss Battles From Metal Gear Franchise

8. Grey Fox/Cyborg Ninja (Metal Gear Solid)

Cast your mind back to when you first played Metal Gear Solid. As Solid Snake, you'd already came up across a load of genome soldiers, fended off Revolver Ocelot and even put down a tank.

Then, suddenly, you find yourself in a corridor, littered with bodies and blood. You follow the trail to its source and, after finding Otacon, a MOTHER-FREAKIN' cyborg ninja with invisibility powers reveals himself.

Talk about a mindblowing moment and a half. This is where the game went from cool to OHMYGODYESIT'SAWESOME.

The boss fight itself has the ninja moving quickly and making use of his stealth camouflage to ambush Snake. Using his sword, he'll rush Snake, block his bullets and whittle down your health bar real quickly.

To beat him, Snake needs to put up his dukes and have a good old fist fight. It's all about situational awareness and realising where the ninja is hiding (you'll quickly learn to spot the sheen off his stealth camo).

After playing Metal Gear Solid, practically everybody wanted to play as the Cyborg Ninja. If you grabbed a copy of MGS: VR Missions (Special Missions in Europe), there were three levels dedicated to letting you do just that. I may well have played them over and over and over again. I regret nothing.

This encounter is also responsible for the long-running gag of Otacon pissing himself, which is always welcome.
