Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex was the first title in the series to be released on PS2, the first to make the jump cross-console, and the fourth major entry to the franchise, albeit without a number. For many, it was their first introduction to Crash, however that didn't save it from a scathingly lukewarm reception on release.

There just weren't many new features introduced, with Travellers Tales playing it safe by essentially saying: 'Glad you liked Crash 3: Warped! Here it is again."

At least, that is the case for every aspect of the game bar one: The villains.

Wrath of Cortex's story revolves around Dr. Neo Cortex creating an all-new Bandicoot superweapon to defeat Crash that he names Crunch. Uka Uka then harnesses the power of the Elementals (also introduced in the game), infusing Crunch with different powers that players must defeat at the end of each of the game's hub worlds.

Not only are these varied and legitimately challenging boss battles the highlight of the Wrath of Cortex, but Crunch would go on to become one of the series' most important characters.

Brash and confident, he acts as the perfect opposite to Crash and even gets a decent redemption story at the end of the game.
