Released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, was a hybrid platformer and puzzle game.

The eponymous Henry Hatsworth is a gentleman adventurer – think Indiana Jones if he was obsessed with tea. Henry is supported by a cast of colourful characters: Henry’s assistant Cole – a boy-genius who looks like he stepped straight from the pages of Oliver Twist – and Leopold Weasleby, Henry’s greatest rival, and fellow member of The Pompous Adventurer’s Club.

The gameplay is where things get a little strange; on the DS’s top screen the game plays out like a resolutely old-school side-scrolling platformer.

However, when Henry defeats an enemy, they are relegated to the DS’s bottom screen where they're added to a match-three-blocks puzzle game. The player switches between the two modes, ensuring the lower screen doesn’t fill with pieces and trigger a game over.

It’s a bizarre game, but for any platformer fans, it’s a stellar example of the genre.
