10 AMAZING Video Games That Didn't Get Sequels
3. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
2002's Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem revolved around Alex Roivas, who rather unfortunately, has just inherited her grandfather’s clearly haunted mansion.
While searching the building, she discovers her grandfather’s investigations into mysterious god-like beings known as the Ancients, who have been at war with each other for millennia. Gameplay switches between Alex in the present and historical figures who have also tangled with the Ancients.
So far, so very H.P. Lovecraft.
Eternal Darkness is best remembered for its "Sanity" system; the more horrors you encountered, the bigger the toll would be taken on your character’s sanity, resulting in hallucinations. A few of these effects were scary, but were more often comical, some favourites include: your character’s head falling off, or the game abruptly crashing and reporting your save file has been deleted.
A sequel named, Shadow of the Eternals, was mooted around 2006 and rumours persisted till 2013 when Eternal Darkness’s developer Silicon Knights shuttered its doors.
Nintendo has persisted in renewing its trademark for the IP, as recently as 2020, suggesting the Nintendo hierarchy still see some potential in a sequel.
