After the disappointment of Far Cry 2, Ubisoft had to pull it out the bag with Far Cry 3. Luckily they did that and then some! Far Cry 3 offers a perfect mix of shooting, exploration, and characterisation as you are tasked with rescuing your friends from the psychopathic inhabitants of a tropical island.

It’s impossible to talk about Far Cry 3 without talking about Vaas: one of the most terrifying antagonists in modern gaming. Vaas makes an immediate impression as he shoots your brother in front of you then gleefully allows you time to escape before giving chase. His unpredictability leads to a genuine sense of peril every time he is on screen, and a real sense of urgency throughout as you fear for the safety of your friends who are being held by this madman.

In addition to Vaas, Far Cry 3 also offers an absolutely stunning environment to play around in. There is a huge variety of animals to hunt or be hunted by, secret letters that reveal more about the mysterious island, gorgeous scenery that will make you weep, and the gameplay offers a great mix of stealth and shoot ‘em up, with both options being viable choices in any given situation.

In fact, Far Cry 3 is so good that Ubisoft made essentially the same game with Far Cry 4, leading to a worry that it may begin to follow the Assassin’s Creed series but, as it stands, this is still Ubisoft’s finest achievement.
