Take the plot of Twin Peaks and jack it up on every drug imaginable, and you’ve got Deadly Premonition. This is one of those games you have to play to truly understand the depths of its bizarre and surreal nature, which is such that it has garnered a devoted cult following.

You play as FBI agent Francis York Morgan, who is investing the murder of a young girl in the fictional town of Greenvale, Washington. You are able to explore the town at your leisure, and it doesn’t take long before you realize just how…peculiar the atmosphere of Greenvale is. It has a cast of hilariously weird characters, including Francis, who defines eccentric.

The plot and dialogue are inexplicably confusing and anomalous, which makes it incredibly entertaining, enough for you to forgive the clunky controls and poor production values. If anything these flaws only add to the game’s oddball charm.

It’s not for everyone, but those with a love for surrealistic horror comedy will feel right at home with Deadly Premonition. It scratches a very particular itch and does it very well, creating an idiosyncratic work of video game art that holds a special place in many people’s hearts.
