Yes, it checks his/her analytical abilities, and it also works out well as a story about the hero being manipulated by both his brother and January, the operator he/she created anticipating his/her memory loss. Though, it's hard to say what motivated him/her to do so.
The big test of empathy therefore boils down to whether you'll decide to trust your brother or your former self. Somebody needs a dictionary.
