10 Annoying Video Game Trends That Must Die In 2017
2. Unnecessary Remasters
Remasters are now more prevalent that new releases, with companies seeing them as a way to fork a quick buck out of anyone who wants to play the game again. Often simply tweaking lighting and textures and putting it on a new console is enough for a AAA developer to charge the full price for the game. Don’t get me wrong, some remasters are entirely necessary, but most fall under the category of shameless cash grab.
I’m sorry to say this, but Skyrim did not deserve a remaster. Despite adding mods to the consoles, the remaster simply made it look a little prettier, something that no one was asking for and no one necessarily wanted. The game still looks good on PS3, and the remaster was based solely around money. But while these remasters simply tweak it enough to look new, there are those that warrant the title.
Upcoming Crash Bandicoot trilogy is an example. Trying to play the original is hard enough - and that’s if you can find a console to play it. And with updated graphics, it proves itself to be worth the title of remaster, bringing the game to a new younger audience. It holds merit, while Skyrim was marketed towards the same audience that bought it in 2011.
The need for games that were released in the past few years to have remasters already is minuscule, and we don’t need anymore. Unless they are going to overhaul the entire game like they did with Ratchet and Clank or add completely new content, it is just not worth the time and money on both sides.
