10 Archetypes That Built Gaming

1. The Nobody/Mute Protagonist

Usually an offshoot in the hero category this is one of the most used character types you€™ll find in gaming. The nobody is a tool design for players to instantly bond to their protagonist where essentially, the nobody was you (no offence). From Secret of Mana to the latest Fallout games, this trope has been reused time and time again to hurl an ordinary everyday person into a world of excitement and danger, where the only hope for salvation lies in your grossly inexperienced hands. Ancient evils, epic quests, strange side games have all been bettered by this nobody, because the rest of the world was too busy running their shops or not giving a damn that monsters have risen from the ground beneath them to wipe out existence. It meant that the player had a plausible reason for having little to none of the skills required for defeating said evil or quest, and made the player feel they too could one day too, fire ludicrously powerful bolts of lightning from their hands (metaphorically, of course). Are there any we've missed off? What are your favourite archetypes of gaming that have stood the test of time? Let us know in the comments!
