10 Awesome Apocalyptic Video Games

8. Metro 2033

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc2hhef-Nzo There aren't too many video games out there that are adapted from books rather than movies or TV shows, but Metro 2033 is unquestionably one of the best, especially because its flavour is so very different from what we're used to, asserting a tone that is staunchly rooted in its Eastern European setting. With all the philosophical hopelessness of a Dostoevsky novel, Metro 2033 takes place during a time in which it is long accepted that the world has pretty much ended, and all we're witnessing are the tragic remnants further crumbling to pieces. While many Western takes on this concept would promote repopulating civilisation and trying to start anew, that is not even a distant concept here; there is no faith in that idea, and rather, people simply have to get on with the depressing status quo. Underground bunkers and disused train stations serve as homes for many, ammo is the land's most precious commodity, and it all makes for a downbeat but brilliant adventure that teaches the most optimistic post-apocalyptic tales a thing or two.
