10 Awesome Apocalyptic Video Games

7. Left 4 Dead (series)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5spmvBxLp4 The zombie apocalypse is probably the most overdone scenario in this sort of story, except perhaps for the giant tidal wave in blockbuster movies that kills everyone. It's a concept that's long since become rote and tiresome, as we've had to endure countless rip-offs in both the video game and movie world. Left 4 Dead might on the face of it just seem like another light and entertaining zombie shooter, but what separates this game from its competition is the very convincing, eerie feeling that you really are one of the four remaining people on the planet, and that perhaps that isn't such a "lucky" position to be in. The game conveys the hopelessness of this scenario in a more brute-force style than Metro 2033; the zombies will break down doors and pick you off one-by-one if you don't think on your feet, and most of all, co-operate. And that's really the master-stroke of the game; online play is an absolute blast, because if one player isn't switched on, the entire team is going to suffer, which can be both extremely frustrating and also rather hilarious.
