10 Awesome Apocalyptic Video Games

5. Beneath A Steel Sky

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm7V-VrlJuo Beneath A Steel Sky is the first "old" game on our list, and it's also one of the best, a point-and-click adventure set in the remnants of Australia following a non-specific but certainly catastrophic nuclear event. It's one of the first video games to make an attempt at social commentary, for the downtrodden and poor have to live in the highly polluted areas, shortening their lives considerably, while the rich and advantaged get to live in radiation-free dwellings underneath the surface. If that wasn't enough, a tyrannical super-computer called LINC now runs Australia, a comment on the potential for technology to ruin us if left unchecked, and when special agents come looking for our protagonist, there are some shady and nefarious motives that are unveiled later in the game. Though the game is a bleak view of the future, it's also peppered with some devilishly black humour, making this a thoroughly engrossing, pulpy experience that nevertheless doesn't make us feel like committing hara-kiri.
