10 Awesome Apocalyptic Video Games

2. Final Fantasy VI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDMWp1oLoA0 Final Fantasy VI is in the eyes of many the best Final Fantasy game, and it's easy to see why, because without all the technical sophistication of the recent games in the series, it manages to tell a far more engaging, character-driven narrative that isn't tied down by the sub-anime dialogue and irritating characters of the more recent titles. FFVI isn't just bleak, it even goes as far as to actually have its antagonist, an evil, menacing clown named Kefka, basically win half-way through the game. It seems like things are about to wind down, and then bam, Kefka shows up and not only devastates your party, but also the world which you inhabit, reducing it to a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Think of him as a Joker-like antagonist, menacing, nihilistic and violently destructive, and though we do dispatch him at the end of the game, he's already done such a wealth of damage by then that it's really too little, too late. All they can do is try to rebuild this world which, given the extent of its destruction, is not going to be easy.
