10 Awesome Games You Definitely Missed In 2024
6. Tales of Kenzera: Zau
Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a terrific Metroidvania title released this past spring which was directed by actor Abubakar Salim and inspired by his own grief after losing his father.
This affecting tale focuses on a young shaman, Zau, who sets off on a quest to revive his fallen father, wrapped around a simple but engaging Metroidvania gameplay loop.
Beyond its spritely art direction, superb voice acting, and fluid traversal gameplay, Tales of Kenzera also presents a world heavily inspired by Bantu cultures, in turn offering up lore and locales rarely seen in video games elsewhere.
Despite scoring solid reviews from critics, however, Tales of Kenzera suffered massively by releasing several months after another similar but better-received Metroidvania - Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
As a result, the game launched to disappointing sales, leading to more than a dozen employees being laid off from developer Surgent Studios back in July.
For a game made with so much passion, that's a devastating outcome.
