The Grand Theft Auto series is more about running away from law enforcement officers than being one; however, if you really want to see what it means to be a cop in Liberty City, GTA IV has the perfect mode for you.

The so-called Vigilnate missions are a secret game mode that you can access at any point in the story by stealing a police vehicle and then going through the criminal records on its internal computer. Doing this will allow you to track random criminals running rampant in the city and eliminate them one by one.

Compared to its predecessors from Vice City and San Andreas, Vigilante missions in Grand Theft Auto IV have a lot more variety as they are divided into two categories. You either have to take down a whole gang of criminals or chase a single suspect, escaping a crime scene on foot.

The missions are pretty straightforward, but they really capture the feeling of being a loose-cannon cop who's cleaning the dirty streets of Liberty City one shootout at a time.

Just don't do too many of them, or one day you'll catch yourself saying you're getting too old for this job.
