1. Shadow Complex

Shadow Complex is one of the few indie games you can play that feels like a full tilt release title. Powered by Unreal Engine 3, the graphics are spectacular and add to the incredible presentation the game delivers. The story develops as protagonist Jason Fleming and his girlfriend Claire stumble across a sinister group of soldiers known as the Progressive Restoration. The group, who is hell bent on taking over the U.S., kidnap Claire and send the story spiraling into the fast paced shoot em up that is Shadow Complex.

Upon its release in 2009 for XBox Live, reviews for Shadow Complex were abundantly positive. The few deterrents of the game were sporadic environmental and A.I. glitches, but those types of issues are bound to happen from time to time when games have to hit their deadlines. It plays like old school shooters Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, and Super Metroid, the latter seeming to be a huge inspiration for the title. The world of Shadow Complex is huge for a downloadable game, filled with secret passages, special items, and much more. The controls and shooting mechanics take some time to get used to, but it is time well spent for such an impressive indie game.
