And #1 on the list could never be anything else. The greatest moment in Half-Life history comes with the end of the very first game, in which, after defeating the Nihilanth, Gordon is faced with the G-Man, who presents him a choice: join his employ, or face an unwinnable battle should he refuse. The player can either enter a green portal and the game simply ends with him on G-Man's employ and "awaiting assignment", or refuse to enter, and after about 15 seconds, G-Man will send you to an alien cave complete with an unbeatable horde of monsters. The game fades to black with the final text stating that "subject declined offer of employment", quite clearly implying Gordon's death. Even though the original ending is obviously the canon ending, it's brilliantly chilling either way, that Gordon spends so long fighting his way through alien monsters and HECU soldiers only to become enslaved by G-Man. It is, of course, an irresistible cliffhanger for what turned out to be a superior game in every way, Half-Life 2. What are your favourite moments in the Half-Life series?
