One of the most complex stages from the game, Bowser’s Castle introduces multiple elements, balancing them perfectly as the player moves through the stage.

There’s a nice sense of flow, the various hazards placed in perfect succession, providing ample challenge without hindering the flow of the race, several turns requiring particular precision and handling. It’s progressive, gradually building in intensity until the moment of conclusion.

In this respect, Bowser’s Castle is a standout stage from Mario Kart 64, ranking among the best in the series. Visually, it’s the most interesting, and the music is beyond phenomenal. It’s designed perfectly, pushing the player onwards, challenging them without resorting to underhanded hazard placements or irregular corner turns.

The Thwomps – though frequent – are easily avoided, designed to keep the player focused as they speed through the section, rather than interrupting the pacing of the race and infuriating the racers.

Bowser’s Castle is one of the more memorable stages from the game – as well as many people’s favourite – for a very good reason. It’s the complete package; it’s challenging, the music is addictive and the visuals are stimulating.
