10 Awesome Moments That Defined The N64
6. Sneak 'N' Snore (Mario Kart 2)
Mario
Party – a series which began on N64 – has been delivering in terms of
multiplayer co-op since 1998. That said, the series really hit its stride with
its second instalment, which boasted a more impressive line-up of minigames
than its predecessor, and is considered a standout even today. In particular, ‘Sneak
‘N’ Snore’ was a highlight for anyone who played the game regularly, a delight
that seemed only to come up on occasion, though always delivered the goods.
The objective was to sneak across the screen, press a button and retreat to safety without getting caught by the sleeping Chain Chomp. Simple enough, but the slumbering tyrant would occasionally awaken – and if it saw movement – it would pounce on unsuspecting players, dragging them off screen before returning to its snooze. Without a doubt, the game awarded bravery, but it also punished unnecessary recklessness. By the end, desperation would inevitably set in, forcing players to sprint for the exit before their opponents can make their escape, which would exasperate matters more.
‘Sneak ‘N’ Snore’ was the perfect blend – and considering the overall quality of the other minigames – it’s a testament to its enduring appeal that it's managed to stand out from the pack.
