Mortal Kombat's demonic, soul-hoarding shapeshifter Shang Tsung is unquestionably one of the series' most beloved villains, so many fans were miffed when, roughly two-thirds of the way through Mortal Kombat 9's story mode, the antagonist is summarily sacrificed by his boss, Shao Kahn.

In order to empower Sindel, Kahn kills Tsung, in turn taking all the souls he's gathered over the centuries and imparting them into Sindel, allowing her to make short work of the gathered heroes.

Granted, nobody ever stays dead in the Mortal Kombat games for very long, but even so, it was frustrating to see Shang Tsung wiped out before the game's climax, especially as he effectively sat out Mortal Kombat X and only returned as a DLC character in the recent Mortal Kombat 11.
