6. Haytham Kenway - Assassin's Creed III
In Assassin's Creed III, a Native-American called Connor is left inconsolable after the sinister Templars kill everyone in his tribe. Learning his own father, Haytham Kenway, is the Grand Master of the organisation, Connor joins the Templars' sworn enemies, the Assassin Brotherhood.
Due to Connor's conflict with his father, it'd be easy for Haytham to be depicted as a generic villain, especially since he often comes across as pompous snob.
But since the player takes control of the antagonist for the first few hours, they get to see the world from his eyes and understand where he's coming from. Though he became an arrogant fanatic, Haytham dreamed of unifying the Templars and Assassins, bringing an end to the war once and for all.
Despite clashing ideologies, Haytham cares for Connor and genuinely believes his cause is the only way to bring about peace for both of them. Even when he has the opportunity to slay Connor, Haytham repeatedly attempts to reason with him.
Though his holier-than-thou egotism is ever-present, Haytham Kenway is anything but a one-note baddie. In fact, he might very well be the best villain in the entire franchise.
