One of the truly great contemporary survival horror titles, Amnesia: The Dark Descent follows the story of protagonist Daniel as he explores the creepy Brennenburg castle.

Dark and foreboding, the castle is naturally home to a variety of terrifying monsters that players must overcome, however perhaps the biggest enemy in the game is the floods of darkness that surround every corner.

Amnesia features a unique 'afraid of darkness' metre that players must manage in order to keep Daniel sane. Sanity is drained by witnessing horrifying events, looking at monsters or even staying in the dark too long, and can a lower sanity level will result in players having hallucinations and attracting more enemies. Even less sanity will result in players losing mobility, or even dying on harder difficulties.

According to designer Thomas Grip, "the idea was basically that the darkness itself should be an enemy," and the mechanic does a superb job of raising the paranoia throughout a playthrough.

Out of all the monsters and villains Daniel has to run from, it's the darkness he often finds himself hiding in that really proves to be the biggest baddie in Amnesia.
