10 Awesome Video Games That Came From Terrible Movies

3. Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor

No, not the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Instead it's the overindulgent, CG'd-up cash-cow Hobbit flicks - which also made Ian McKellen break down on set - that kickstarted this project into life. Reportedly originally starting out as a Batman title - which isn't hard to see going off how many aspects are in common with the Arkham games, from combat to traversal - this turned into a LOTR-themed tie-in to run alongside the newer Peter Jackson films. Although it's not a direct tie-in to the movies, there's a much more definitive sense of purpose and drive behind Monolith's first incredible outing on new-gen hardware. By playing as new character Talion and tying him to Silmarillion-legend Celebrimbor it allowed for a narratively light tale that instead revels in the goretastic thrills of beheading a string of orcs in a blur of blades and muffled growls. Throw in the ability to mind-control your own army as the game progresses and the finishing move of popping their heads like champagne corks when anyone has served their purpose, and you have one of the most glorious excursions into Middle-earth there's been since the movie tie-ins two generations ago.
