10 Awesome Video Games That Came From Terrible Movies
2. The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Just look at that screenshot. That was taken from the original Xbox release, a whole decade ago. Thanks to Vin Diesel himself getting stuck into the design of the game, both as Riddick and a creative consultant heading up his own design studio, it meant just the right amount of care and attention went into bringing this to life. Sadly the same couldn't be said for the movie counterpart, in which the goggle-wearing maniac was still his old see-in-the-dark one-liner-quipping self, but the movie's events became a mess of a sci-fi mumbo-jumbo and occasional fight scenes that didn't do justice to the potential of the surrounding characters. Butcher Bay focussed on how Riddick actually received his unique 'Eyeshine' ability in prison, navigating the horrors of the graphically stunning prison itself, both before and after the experiment. With weighty first person combat that saw you throwing massive haymakers alongside finishing enemies off with quick-cut third-person animation and a variety of weapons, when you finally gained the ability to see in the dark, playing with your militaristic prey like the best parts of the movie makes for one of the best franchise-extensions in history.
