There's no denying that Half-Life fans have had their attention trained pretty strictly on Half-Life: Alyx over the last few months, but you shouldn't forget that Black Mesa, the third-party remake of the original game shockingly given Valve's blessing, was also released earlier this year.

After years and years in development, Black Mesa finally gives fans the definitive update to the original masterpiece they so thoroughly deserve.

While neither the visuals nor the gameplay feel in any way close to 2020 per the game's lengthy production cycle, Black Mesa is nevertheless a massive improvement both aesthetically and mechanically.

The graphics - and more specifically, the art design - are frequently remarkable, especially in the hugely superior Xen sections of the game, while the gameplay has been reworked to mimic Half-Life 2's approach to combat and traversal.

It's a compelling enough experience that it's honestly tough to even think about going back to play Valve's original.

Though this is in no way a straight Half-Life remake, most of the changes improve the core experience or at least offer up an interesting reworking of what came before.
