3. Metroid: Other M (Wii) - Samus In Distress
Samus Aran is a bad ass. That's really her defining feature. The revelation that the protagonist of the Metroid franchise is a woman ranks among the greatest surprises in gaming history. Maybe it's not a good thing that it was so surprising, but then that just goes to show how important she is to the industry as a whole. It did matter. She was cold, effective, unphased, and women weren't presented like that in video games back then. Samus is a gaming pioneer. She turned perceptions on their head. And then there's Metroid: Other M, a return to the 2D glory days with all the (comparative) power of the Wii behind it. Bliss. Well, the gameplay mechanics were up there; they did a good job, but the story? We'd rather forget the story. It's too upsetting. Samus is no more. In her place a whiny, over emotional, Galactic Federation dependent, grey, lifeless, never shuts up, two hours of cutscene torture, stereotypical video game damsel. Is this how you give a character depth? Remove everything that makes them unique and force feed us generic space shooting slurry? For shame! Learn from this! You ruined a sure-fire classic.
