10 Awful Plot Twists That Completely Ruined Great Games

3. Nintendo Thinks You're Stupid, So No Super Mario Bros. 2 For You!

While you may think this twist is about how Mario Bros. 2 is all a dream, the reality is that the big twist contained within the game is that its very existence means Nintendo thought you were stupid. The 'real' Super Mario Brothers 2 wasn't released in America because Nintendo thought it was too hard, and too similar to the first Mario game (though it eventually saw release in Super Mario All Stars on the SNES as 'The Lost Levels'). Instead, America got a re-purposed Doki Doki Panic, resulting in a really, really, strange, Arabian themed, Mario game that didn't sit quite right with players, especially young players who couldn't quite figure out what happened to the Mario game they played to death and loved, and were particularly upset about the lack of their beloved fire flower power up. The fact that Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't actually Super Mario Brothers 2, flat out ruined the game. It's regarded as something of a redheaded step-child of the series, as this thing Americans' got instead of the real game because they weren't tough enough to handle its challenges. When confronted with this revelation, any and all appreciation for Super Mario Brothers 2 fades away and is replaced with scorn and resentment. No-one likes being called stupid, and in this situation, Nintendo was calling an entire country stupid - and regardless of how good a game is, if the reason it exists comes from such a sour place, it's ruined before its even played.
