Atomic Heart, the first-person shooter set in retro-futuristic Soviet Russia, features two endings: one where your character, P-3, finally gets to think free and escapes from the chaos of killer robots and sick experiments, and one where you decide to go after the final boss... only to be rewarded with a disappointing twist.

Yes, what kind of ending you get is purely dependent on the choice you're given in the final act. The game will ask you if you want to face Sechenov and stop his mind-control plot or walk away and let someone else deal with your problems.

At first glance, it seems like doing the latter would lead to a bad ending, but choosing to walk away shows P-3 finally being at peace with himself.

On the other hand, when you finish the job and beat Sechenov in what is one of the hardest fights in the game, you get the bad ending, where it's revealed you've been manipulated and you just helped the real evil bad guy fulfill his plan for world domination.

So yes, according to the game, the best things happen to you when you simply don't do your job.
