10 Badass Gaming Heroines That Could Have The Men For Breakfast
8. Bonnie MacFarlane
In the Wild West, female characters are often marginalised. The closest most westerns come to a strong female is a flirty barmaid while the rest are left at home with children. Rockstar's outstanding characterisation is prominent in all their games so when they turned their hand to a western it was no surprise that they introduced us one of the strongest female characters of recent years. While she was not a particularly central character in Red Dead Redemption, Bonnie MacFarlane was a strong woman more than holding her own in a man's world. All but one of her six brothers had died and the survivor had left town to become a banker. Of the seven she was the only one remaining and therefore had to take on a traditional male role by running the family ranch on her own. Although there are conversations from later in the game that hint that she did eventually marry, during the game Bonnie was single and showed no intention of wanting to be anything else. Bonnie isn't sexualised and demands respect and equality in a sexist society. Those who do decide to mess with her end up regretting it. The first time she appears she saves the life of John Marston and then teaches him how to break horses, lasso, etc. in tutorials. She could ride, shoot and tend cattle better than the game's own hero and taught him everything he needed to know. That's a woman who can take care of herself.
