Believe it or not, there was a time in gaming where Mecha based games were all the craze. Personally, I never understood them and the controls were always a complicated mess I just couldn't wrap my head around. But for the people who loved it, good god did they love it. And these games weren't for the casual player, they were for those who loved a challenge and wanted to be tested - also for those who just simply loved mechs in general, the serious fans of Gundam.

When you think of Mecha video games, there are two series' that should instantly come to mind: Armored Core and Steel Battalion. Armored Core is one of the few that's lasted to the past few years, having its last major release in 2013. The thing is, of the last nine releases, five weren't released outside of Japan.

While Mecha games may still be alive and well in the East, they are all but dying here in the West.

The other juggernaut from this genre was Steel Battalion, mostly known for its absolutely ridiculous controller, which featuring two gaming sticks and a plethora of buttons. This is where the "complicated mess" of controls comes in. Just looking at the controller is overwhelming, it's hard to know where to even start, but to hardcore fans, this was one of the most immersive things ever made back in 2002.

You could argue this genre is making a very weak comeback thanks to games like Titanfall, but that's more of an FPS than a true Mecha game. Either way you look at it, these sorts of titles just aren't around as much as they used to be.
