If you're a 90's kid, there's no way you don't remember a certain series of games under the title, Twisted Metal. It certainly wasn't the only vehicular combat game, but it's easily the most recognizable. Fans will remember games like Interstate '76, Carmageddon, Vigilante 8, Rogue Trip and many more.

For as simple as these games were at their core, they were very enjoyable. They may not have had a lot of depth objectively, making it a little more understandable as to why they aren't as prevalent anymore, and yes, if Twisted Metal was released today as it was back in 1995, critics and gamers would tear it apart for lack of content, especially if released at full price. But back then, the game worked perfectly, taking the industry by storm, as easily shown by the amount of similar games that would come soon after.

Now-a-days, vehicular combat games are all but gone, with the exception of select games. The last game to come from the Twisted Metal franchise was in 2012, whilst the most recent Carmageddon was in 2015- albeit after a Kickstarter got it off the ground, rather than a publisher. In between those releases there was virtually nothing, and we've seen nothing since.

While the genre may have been a very small blip on the radar in retrospect, it was one of the more enjoyable trends to ever hit the market.
