10 Beloved Video Game Mascots You Totally Forgot

6. Alex Kidd

Goemon character
SEGA

Sega's original mascot hasn't seen a full title release since 1990. Relegated to the back bench after Sonic the Hedgehog hit the scene, this 80's gaming icon suffered the fate of just not being cool enough for a hip 1990s audience.

In the 1980s, when Mario burst onto the scene the bar had been raised extremely high for games. The brand recognition he brought to the table caught the eyes of developers across the industry and thus began the rush to create a mascot that could compete with Nintendos smash hit. Thus, Alex Kidd in Miracle World was born and released on the Sega Mastersystem in 1986.

Despite lacking a game of his own for decades, he has made several cameo appearances in many Sega games such as in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing in 2010. But all hope is not lost for Alex, as it was announced that a full remake of his debut title would be making its way to store shelves in 2021. Will this be a renasaunce period for Alex? One can only hope.
