10 Beloved Video Game Mascots You Totally Forgot

5. Glover

Goemon character
Hasbro Interactive

When Glover was released for the Nintendo 64 back in 1998 it was hard to find somebody who didn't own a copy. Whether it was down to being packaged with N64's or just housed in a particularly enticing box this little glove was everywhere but only for a short time.

Glover is quite a unique specimen. The gameplay centres around a sentient glove that has to roll a ball around a level to make it through a series of challenges and objectives. Glover stood out from the platforming crowd for not simply being your typical, walk character from A to B and jump on enemies, instead, it opted to use a lot more puzzle elements in its design. Reviewers at the time found the gameplay loop to be enticing and the music that accompanied it to be a perfect fit.

Glovers eventual fade into obscurity is one of mismanagement from the publisher. Instead of ordering 150,000 copies for the N64 which was standard at the time, Hasbro decided to order double that which left the company with 150,000 extra cartridges and nowhere to ship them. This ultimately cost the company so much money that they couldn't afford to complete the sequel for Glover which was reported to be 80% complete at the time.
