10 Beloved Video Games Series That Have Been Ruined By The Industry

Resident Evil may have got there first, but if that game defined survival horror, then the early Silent Hill games took us deeper and deeper down that rabbit hole.

The series arguably peaked with Silent Hill 2, which cleverly used its surreal tone to explore the theme of grief. While neither Silent Hill 3 nor 4 were as profound, they still dared to be different, maintaining that distinctive atmosphere while changing up the story. (I still think Silent Hill 4, taking place in a single labyrinthine apartment, is underrated.)

But then things started breaking down. The main series took a four-year hiatus while spewing out a few mediocre spin-offs, before returning with Homecoming in 2008, which was far from the triumphant return Konami no doubt wanted to evoke with that title. While it still sort-of looked and sounded the part, it lacked the originality and power of its predecessors.

A succession of poor games afterwards pushed the series into ignominy, before the incredible PT demo for Silent Hills offered us hope of redemption. Sadly, Konami and Hideo Kojima had their well-publicised rift, resulting in Konami making a Silent Hill pachinko machine, while Kojima's gone off to make a game about dead fish and babies.
