10 Beloved Video Games That Left A Horrible First Impression

7. Wolfenstein: The New Order

Red Dead Redemption
Bethesda

Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of the most underrated shooters of the modern generation. Paving the way for the likes of this year's DOOM, the 2014 reboot from Machine Games showed everyone that an old-school, multiplayer-less first-person shooter could still work in the modern age.

But most players probably wouldn't come to that conclusion if they only managed to get through the title's opening few chapters. Because not only does the latest Wolfenstein take a while to get into the action after a lengthy and awkward blimp repair sequence, but even the initial World War II assault that comes after manages to be one of the most brainless firefights the game has to offer.

Resembling more of an on-rails Call of Duty level than the wide-open player-driven skirmishes of the later campaign, this heavily-scripted introduction completely misrepresents Wolfenstein's core gameplay, and could fool many into thinking The New Order was yet another bog-standard first-person shooter.
