10 Beloved Video Games You Forgot Never Got Sequels
3. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Released right around the time survival horror games were starting to run out of steam, Eternal Darkness proved to be one of the most original and definitive games in the genre. With a great sense of playfulness and tension, the game was essentially a "how to" guide for scaring the living daylights out of the player. But the best part of Eteranal Darkness is still the sanity meter, a resource that would deplete whenever you came into contact with any of the lurking ghouls in the game. If this meter dropped too low, then you just knew there'd be some terrible surprises in store for you, and Eternal Darkness would begin to do anything from spawning in a series of un-killable enemies out of nowhere, to faking a glitch that made it seem like your save game had accidentally been deleted. With such a well-executed mechanic, the fact that no other games since have adopted a similar style is completely baffling. There were hopes that a sequel to the original Nintendo game was going to be funded through Kickstarter, but because the team were unable to reach their funding goal, the possibility of this beloved game being turned into a franchise looks just about as grim as the title's monsters themselves.
