10. Cassette Beasts

Dropping just a day before another game on our list and two days before Star Wars: Jedi Survivor which is an unenviable release window even given a year this stacked, Cassette Beasts is a monster collectathon role-playing game by Bytten Studio and Raw Fury.

You’ll tame critters that you can then battle with in turn-based battles that play out with the aesthetic of a cassette player.

While you might have passed this one off as simply a Pokemon clone, it’s much more than that. Though the game’s inspiration is clear it goes a step further in several capacities. The first is that it isn’t shackled by needing to appeal to a younger target market. Beyond that the game flies above the typical genre trappings with a stellar soundtrack, brightly coloured pixel art visuals, and a compelling fusion system.

If you’re feeling tempted and you know you’re keen on the gameplay format but aren’t sure if you want to dive in, it’s worth noting this one is a steal at 20 US bucks.

In a year stacked with heavy narratives and inundating gameplay systems, Cassette Beasts is a nostalgia-laden breath of fresh air with a genuinely engaging story, rewarding exploration, and oodles of charm.
