10 Best Apocalyptic Video Games That DON'T Involve Zombies

9. Far Cry New Dawn

Death Stranding
Ubisoft

A spin-off from the main Far Cry series, Far Cry New Dawn actually manages to surpass some of the slightly stale recent entries thanks to its unusual setting.

A soft sequel to Far Cry 5, the narrative takes place 17 years after ‘The Collapse’ - the nuclear disaster that devastated the setting of Hope County at the end of the prior game. New Dawn sees survivors attempt to rebuild their community and fight off violent bandits within a large open world that features many classic Far Cry features.

Despite this, the game succeeds in both removing itself from its predecessor enough that it’s accessible for brand new players, while simultaneously tying in with the previous narrative. Newly-introduced RPG-elements that emulate games such as the Fallout series help realise the irradiated setting’s community and culture to provide a better depth of atmosphere and story.

Thankfully, the deliberately vibrant, more upbeat and lively tone of both gameplay and environment sets the game apart from the myriad desperately bleak takes on the apocalyptic genre. There’s only so much fun to be possibly had following the world’s nuclear destruction, but Far Cry New Dawn certainly capitalises on the best of it, guns blazing.
