10 Best Apocalyptic Video Games That DON'T Involve Zombies
8. Tom Clancy's The Division
In a scenario which is now more than a little familiar to all of us, Tom Clancy’s The Division is centered around the aftermath of a viral pandemic, when a weaponized version of smallpox distributed via bank notes sends multiple major US cities into lockdown.
Tasked with rebuilding operations in and protecting Manhattan, the player combats criminal activity triggered by the outbreak and attempts to discover the source as a member of the titular Division.
Despite being online-only and featuring multiplayer and PVP modes focusing on the third person shooter gameplay, The Division’s story content is far more central than in many other shooters, and the open world environment and RPG elements allow the player to feel fully immersed in the disaster-stricken city.
While the concept of a devastating pandemic as a game world post-pandemic may feel a little too close to home for many players, The Division’s execution is successful enough that both it and its sequel - Washington, D.C.-set Tom Clancy's The Division 2, featuring another genetically-engineered virus - are more than worth playing.
