10 Best Baseball Video Games Of All Time
1. MVP Baseball 2005
MVP Baseball 2005 is widely considered to be the best baseball game of all time. Some listings on Amazon still have the game selling for $30 or more over a decade later. And the game is so widely touted as the best that modding communities are keeping the game alive and well on the PC with updated rosters, uniforms, stadiums and even walk up music after all this time. Such a cult following has surrounded this game because simply nothing else compares.
This game was absolutely bursting at the seems with content back in 2005 as well. It featured one of the most extensive list of teams, present and past. Each MLB team had their A, AA, and AAA affiliate included in the game along with players. Also included were 15 classic stadiums to pair with the 60+ legendary players and over 100 retro uniforms. MVP Baseball 2005 really offered it all.
The content wasn't a distraction from anything either, as the gameplay was easy to grab on to, responsive and addicting. The newest addition to the game was the "hitter's eye" which let hitters try to determine the type of pitch coming at them. The ball would turn a certain color as it left the pitchers hand signaling what type of pitch it was; white for fastball, red for breaking ball, green for off-speed pitches and so on. You could also keep track of the pitches so far for a batter, and what type they were with the press of a single button.
Franchise modes let you take total control of the owner and be responsible for the entire financial side of a baseball club and try to last 30 years in Owner mode, or take control of a manger and team in Dynasty mode for up to 120 seasons. Yes, 120 seasons. Which is the equivalent of over 19,000 regular season games. All while managing team morale, chemistry, salaries, lineups and more.
MVP Baseball 2005 was the last in the line of MLB licensed MVP games, but it's lived on for over a decade through strong fan support. With the amazing gameplay and content, it's truly no surprise as to why it's managed to cement itself in video game history.
