The battle royale genre had to start somewhere and a mod for the game Arma 3 is generally considered to be the real starting point of it all. Before PUBG was even a thing, PlayerUnknown himself Brendan Greene created a mod for the zombie-survival game DayZ, simply called DayZ: Battle Royale, based on the Japanese novel of the same name. When people began leaving the game, Greene instead began developing a battle royale mod for Arma 3.

Considered still the most intense and hardcore battle royale game on the market, Arma 3's battle royale mod is a military simulator at its core, with a laser focus on realism. Compared to this, most other battle royale titles feel positively light - here, you need to account for everything if you want to survive and that includes the likes of bullet drop and wind speed.

Unfortunately, despite a cult following for the game, its servers remain relatively quiet. The game also suffers from a number of bugs as a result of the game not originally being developed for battle royale. Still, it's unflinchingly hardcore and there's always room for that in the market.
