Perhaps the battle royale game most similar to the genre's inspirations, The Culling seems like it could be ripped right out of The Hunger Games itself. Set in a dystopian landscape where people are made to kill each other in a sick game show for the entertainment of others, The Culling is perhaps one of the most intimate of the battle royale games. Players are forced into small arenas surrounded by advertisements and made to fight.

The Culling's focus is more on brutal melee combat rather than long-range shooting matches across enormous maps. The small player count of 16 helps to reinforce this - you're playing in a tiny arena, not a massive world. The game is designed to be up close and personal, with bloody, visceral killing being the name of the game. Players can also use makeshift traps and weaponry to gain the upper hand.

Because of the tight space however, combat is less refined. There are guns, but they come with precious little ammo, so it's mostly a game of trying to find someone to bash their head in before it happens to you.
