5. Exdeath / Neo Exdeath – Final Fantasy V
While the story itself is like Marmite - players either love it or hate it – the innovative job system of FFV made for some interesting battles that required lots of dying and trying alternative combinations to progress.
Even some of the random
encounter battles could feel like overwhelming boss fights if your
team didn't have the appropriate skill setup.
The final encounter with Exdeath is memorable not only because of the sheer power that Exdeath wields, but that we witness what happens when that power becomes uncontrollable. Exdeath's main threats are casting Petrify or Frog – both easily ignored if you have a Ribbon equipped.
However, after his hideous transformation into the enormous Neo Exdeath, the fight ramps up to 11. Not only was Neo Exdeath one of the first bosses to scale in difficulty with the level of the party, he was utterly relentless.
His constant barrage of physical and magical attacks, while inflicting status ailments, meant you constantly felt on the back foot.
Ultimately, if the party persevered, they would eventually start to get a handle on his pattern of attacks and take control of the fight, but what a powerful way to finish the game!
