10 Best Castlevania Games

3. Super Castlevania IV

Super Castlevania IV has over the years been included on lists of the best games of all time, and while I don't necessarily think it measures up to the depth offered in some of the more RPG-heavy Castlevanias, it's nevertheless worthy of acclaim.

This instalment featured more of the traditional side-scrolling, hardcore platforming challenge that fans loved back in the SNES days. It arguably perfected the combat, offering the player free control over their whip following an attack for the first time in the series' history and overall feeling more fluid than ever before.

Praise must be given to the visuals. Super Castlevania IV has to be one of the best-looking games on the SNES, and it made great use of Mode 7 to generate some truly stunning back-drops to already super-detailed levels filled to the brim with ghouls to whip on your way to Dracula's lair.

If you're clamouring for some old-school vampire hunting, there are few better versions of the classic Castlevania experience than Super Castlevania IV. It's included in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection (PS4/ Xbox One / Switch and PC), so what's your excuse for not playing it?
