Hellblade tells the tale of Senua, a late 8th century Pict from Orkney, who has traveled to Hellheim to battle for the soul of her dead lover. Already, Hellblade's unique identity should be obvious, but added to the setting is a truly groundbreaking depiction of mental illness, specifically psychosis, in addition to its dark fantasy elements rooted in Norse mythology.

Fusing puzzle-solving, combat, and heavy story elements, Hellblade is the sort of single player story experience that is all the rarer amidst free-to-play multiplayer and in-game transaction heavy titles. If anyone were ever to suggest that games were not capable to telling stories of a quality on par with film or novels, a quick look at Hellblade would confirm otherwise.
