10 Best Directed Video Game Cutscenes Ever
2. Reclaiming The Blades - God Of War (2018)
Ten years ago, if anybody tried to say God of War would one day be worthy of an Oscar for directing, they would have been laughed out of whatever building they stood in. Perhaps even by Creative Director Cory Barlog himself.
Long gone are the days of teenage angst and button-mashing sex scenes, and here comes the age of brooding dads and excellent cinematography.
What God of War has always done best is pure spectacle, and this game is no different. Whether it's meeting the World Serpent, fighting against a lightning breathing dragon, or doing battle on top of a giant. Kratos always seems to provide action that surpasses many of his Hollywood peers. It wouldn't be wrong to say the entire game deserves its place on this list simply for that.
Yet the 2018 sequel defies expectations and perhaps its best moment lies in a somber, nostalgic character moment. When Kratos reclaims the Blades of Chaos he does so with regret. The crackling thunder in the background provides a chilling backdrop as he mournfully wraps those familiar chains around his bloodied arms.
The beautifully done one shot camera follows all of this intimately and the player is allowed to see Kratos at his most vulnerable. A regretful old man, haunted by the ghosts of his past.
