When it was announced that Nintendo would be launching their Gamecube without a Mario title there were more than a few gamers that got a little bit worried. When they announced that the launch lineup would be spearheaded by Luigi and his game would take place in a haunted house many were hitting panic stations.

Finally the game came and it was certainly no Mario. However, what players did get was a rather inventive little title that showed plenty of the classic Nintendo charm while also doing a great job of showcasing the potential of Nintendo's new box of tricks.

Luigi's Mansion may have been a placeholder while Nintendo continued to work on the game that would eventually become Super Mario Sunshine, but it is very much an under-appreciated gem in the Gamecube catalogue. It offered something a little different to the traditional Mario formula, as well as giving one of the company's longest-running characters a chance to enjoy the spotlight for a little while.
