8. Golden Axe - Sega Megadrive

When Nintendo exploded onto the scene with the NES and managed to grab such a stranglehold on the US gaming market in particular, it looked like it would be an impossible task to wrest control away from them. SEGA had already tried it with their Master System, which saw some success in Europe but paled in comparison to Nintendo's behemoth.

So it was that SEGA decided to break out the big guns. With Nintendo seeming fairly content to rest on their laurels for a while, SEGA were hard at work on their next machine. They eventually emerged with the 16-bit Megadrive, which would be the first console to really take the fight back to Nintendo.

Golden Axe was one of the launch titles for that machine and it has an outside shout of being one of the most important Megadrive games of all time. One of the big things for console gamers of the time was playing games on their console that mirrored their arcade equivalents as closely as possible. With Golden Axe SEGA managed to almost achieve an arcade-perfect conversion that wowed gamers who were more used to the scaled down versions offered by 8-bit consoles.

It was more than enough for many and the console went on to great success, though it still didn't quite manage to topple Nintendo.
