If The Witcher 3 and one of gaming’s greatest heroes Geralt gets a look in on this list then so should Planescape: Torment and its mysterious protagonist The Nameless One.

The 1999 RPG was developed by Black Isle Studios, a precursor to Obsidian Entertainment who also created Fallout New Vegas alongside a bunch of other slam dunk games that thankfully don’t qualify for this list as they’re technically sci-fi and not fantasy. While it’s certainly on the dated side in 2024, Planescape: Torment is still a masterwork in video game storytelling where you venture through various planes in order to unravel the mystery of your own immortality and recover your memories.

While it certainly wasn’t unheard of, Planescape: Torment was a massive argument at the time for just how good video games could be at telling grand narratives.

Even though not many people bought it, those who did would tell you it was well worth the price of admission for its colourful and deeply memorable characters, fascinating environments rife with things to be discovered, and satisfying RPG progression mechanics. The game also leaves players with a bunch of options for quest resolution including sleuthing or talking your way to victory which would become pretty standard for any RPG claiming to offer true freedom of player engagement options.
